Internet data caps explained
A data cap is a monthly limit on how much you can download and upload. Many plans have none, but where one applies, going over can add fees or slow you down.
- Speed is how fast data moves. A cap limits how much data you move in a month.
- A 4K stream uses roughly 7 GB an hour. An HD stream uses about 3 GB.
- A typical cap, where there is one, is around 1 terabyte or a little more.
Which plans have caps
Fiber plans usually have no cap. Some cable plans include an allowance, often 1 terabyte (1,000 GB) or more. Traditional satellite plans use priority data: a set amount at full speed, then slower service. Mobile-based home internet may slow heavy users at busy times instead of charging.
How much data things use
| Activity | Data per hour |
|---|---|
| Music streaming | About 0.1 GB |
| HD video | About 3 GB |
| 4K video | About 7 GB |
| Video call | 1 to 2.5 GB |
| Online gaming (playing) | Under 0.3 GB |
Game downloads are the exception: a single new title can be 50 to 150 GB. A household that streams 4K for five hours a day uses about 1 terabyte a month from video alone.
What happens if you go over
It depends on the provider. Common outcomes are a fee for each extra block of data up to a monthly maximum, slower speeds until the next billing cycle, or a warning the first time. The plan's broadband label states the allowance and the charge.
How to stay under
- Check usage in your provider's app mid-month.
- Set streaming apps to HD instead of 4K on small screens.
- Schedule big game and system downloads rather than leaving auto-update on for everything.
- Ask about an unlimited data add-on. It can cost less than repeated overage fees.
When you are shopping
Ask one direct question: is there a monthly data limit on this plan, and what happens if I go over? If two plans cost the same, take the one with no cap.
Common questions
Is 1 TB of data enough?
For most households, yes. Homes with several 4K streamers or frequent large downloads can pass it.
Does a data cap slow my internet?
Not until you reach it. After that, some plans reduce speed and others charge a fee.
Do video calls use a lot of data?
A moderate amount, about 1 to 2.5 GB an hour. Eight hours of calls a day adds up to roughly 200 to 400 GB a month.
